The Omega of FFXIV and FFV are one in the same, however the events of FFV did not occur within the same setting. Omega is an interdimensional being that travels from "star" to "star", as midgardsormr explains; who had encountered Omega before and is also not native to this star. Other examples of interdimensional travel have also happened: Iroha from FFXI, Lightning from XIII, Shantotto from XI, Gilgamesh also from V

And even in my original post I say it may be a mirror (i.e. similar events to FF5 while FF5 still remains in it’s own seperate universe) due to the fact that the Hali of FF5 is a male and the Hali of FFXIV is female (in both her incarnations).
Even if my theory is wrong and that both Halis are not related FF5 is still canonically a story that exists within the FFXIV universe.

I would honestly put FFXI and FFXIV closer to what the traditional idea of a “Final Fantasy” is than FFXIII as well as just being good games.

The actual Ivalice creator is acting as guest director/creator for this content
It really isn’t a “sort of”. FFXIV isn’t set in an alternate anything. It (originally, and may still in the future) borrows ideas and concepts from XI (e.x. All the races are based off XI ones sans Au Ra which are a FFXIV original), as well as other installments in the series (the Crystal tower is a big homage to FFIII).
Apparently, parts of 1.0s story were very similar to FF7 too.
