It’s hard to explain…these examples will probably make it sound boring but like traffic getting held up by a dragon landing on the road or going to college for being a knight/mage/etc.
I can’t explain exactly what I want to see just that nothing has scratched the itch just right.
comfysketches said: I have to agree with this. All the modern fantasy stuff people make is “secret world” stuff, where the magic happens behind the scenes of the mundane world. My dream modern fantasy is where magic and fantasy are a public and historically present part of the world. Bulletproof vests are made with magic wards, some cities are partially underground because of their gnomish and dwarven populations. Dragons are CEOs of companies. Like Shadowrun without the cyberpunk.

rytlocknroll said: It was originally a series of novels but I believe they made a comic about it as well
rytlocknroll said: You might like the Desden Files. It’s kinda Harry Potter-esque in setting that magic exists around us we’re just too stupid to see it, but the entire tone is darker. It’s about a wizard who works as a private detective in Chicago and things go to shit quite often. The author is Jim Butcher.
